Book 4 of The Lost & Found Bureau Mystery

The Echo of Unfinished Things

by Scott McPhee

Beneath the town of Bell Buckle, in rooms the world above has forgotten, the Spiral Heart beats again — restored, golden, alive. Marlo Quill and her friends saved it once. They thought the danger was over.

They were wrong.

On the fourth night after the mending, something wakes in the deepest chamber. It has no name, no voice — only a new kind of hunger, for the warmth of things people love without noticing. It doesn't tear at the world the way a storm does. It listens. And it feeds on the smallest, quietest threads first: a bell that no longer rings, a name that starts to blur, a memory that slips loose like a button falling from a coat.

When the Bureau's First Bell — the one that rang the morning Marlo first found her way underground — goes silent for no reason anyone can explain, it's the first clue in a mystery that pulls Marlo, Eli, Gus, Tessa, and the small, fiercely loyal ferret pip back into the tunnels beneath Bell Buckle, and into corners of the Bureau they never knew new existed. A weightless rolling pin that shouldn't sit still. A museum that isn't empty after dark. A cabinet kept by a woman named Mrs. Larkspur, full of things that were never meant to be collected. A shadow that calls itself, simply, the Collector.

Ordinary objects are behaving in ways that are anything but ordinary, and the friends realize the Pattern — the invisible weave of memory and meaning holding Bell Buckle together — is fraying again. Not in one dramatic tear, but in a hundred small, almost unnoticeable places, the way silence spreads when no one is listening for it.

Eli's strange silver sight starts showing him things he doesn't want to see. Tessa's sharp instincts run up against a mystery that can't be solved by watching alone. Gus's inventions rattle with hope but come up short against something that isn't afraid of noise. And Pip follows a scent that leads somewhere even instinct hesitates to go.

At the center of it all is Marlo — the girl who has always noticed the small things other people step over — and a growing fear that this time, the thing unraveling the Pattern isn't trying to destroy what the Bureau protects. It's trying to become part of it. To be remembered, the way everything the Bureau keeps is remembered — whether the world wants it to be or not.

To stop it, Marlo and her friends will have to go further than ever before: down the bell tower stairs, through a door that shouldn't exist under a bell that no longer rings, into the Bureau of Unfinished Things itself — and finally, to an archive that opens sideways, where the very first question anyone ever asked about the Pattern is still waiting to be answered.

Because some silences aren't empty. Some are just waiting for someone brave enough to fill them back in.

A story about what we lose when we stop paying attention — and what it takes to notice, and hold onto, the ordinary things that quietly hold our world together.
