Marlo and the Spiral Heart

The Lost & Found Bureau Mysteries

by Scott McPhee

Before Bell Buckle had a name, a living Circle pulsed beneath the world—a place of light, memory, and connection. When a crack split its surface, the bright chamber folded in on itself and the world forgot it ever existed. Only the silence remembered.

Centuries later, eleven‑year‑old Marlo Quill accidentally brings home a wooden coin from a school field trip. The coin is warm, humming, and rearranges its carved symbols when she blinks. When she tries to return it, the school librarian—Mrs. Larkspur—leads her through a hidden elevator into the Lost & Found Bureau, an underground agency that investigates objects that don’t behave the way objects should.

There Marlo meets Director Penumbra, gadget‑obsessed Gus, sharp‑eyed Tessa, and Pip the ferret. The Bureau teaches her that objects carry emotional residue—fear, longing, regret—and that some items choose the person they need. The coin has chosen Marlo.

The coin’s shifting spiral matches the symbol on the town’s old fountain, and Penumbra declares it an active object tied to a missing boy: Eli Rowan, who vanished months earlier. When Marlo touches the coin, she feels fear, hope, and a sense of being watched. The coin isn’t trying to return to an owner—it’s trying to lead her somewhere.

Marlo’s training in the Room of Misplaced Things reveals how objects echo the moments they witnessed. A lunchbox replays a broken friendship. A mitten remembers loneliness. A toy train seeks departures instead of destinations. But the mirror in the room shows something far more dangerous: Eli himself, trapped in a reflection, whispering that “the first question matters.”

The Bureau’s adults know more than they admit. Marlo realizes that Eli’s disappearance is connected to the ancient Pattern beneath the town—the same Pattern the coin belongs to. When she follows the coin’s pull to the fountain, she discovers a hidden chamber and the fractured Spiral Heart, the remnant of the world’s forgotten Circle.

Eli is alive but caught inside the Pattern, half‑unraveled by the same silence that once swallowed the ancient chamber. To free him, Marlo must ask the right question—the one the Pattern has been waiting for. Not What happened? but What was lost? That question restores the Heart’s light, reweaves the broken threads, and pulls Eli back into the world.

But the restoration wakes something else.

The silence that once consumed the Circle stirs again, thin and hungry. It retreats, but not far. The Pattern is whole, but trembling. And the coin—now quiet—rests in Marlo’s palm like a promise that the world remembers more than it admits.

Marlo returns home changed: no longer the girl who avoids attention, but the investigator the Pattern chose. The Bureau welcomes her as one of their own. Eli begins to heal. Gus and Tessa become her partners. And deep beneath Bell Buckle, the Spiral Heart beats steadily again.

For now.
